What Is Electrostatic Disinfection and Does Your Facility Need It?

Electrostatic disinfection charges disinfectant particles so they wrap around every surface — including spots a rag never reaches. Here's how it works, which facilities need it, and how to add it to your program.

What is electrostatic disinfection?

Electrostatic disinfection is a spraying method that charges disinfectant particles with a positive electrical charge as they leave the sprayer. Because most surfaces carry a natural negative charge, the disinfectant wraps around and clings to every surface it touches — including the sides and undersides of desks, chairs, equipment, and door frames that a rag or standard spray bottle would miss. The result is uniform, 360-degree coverage with far less chemical waste.

How is it different from regular cleaning and spraying?

Standard spray-and-wipe disinfection depends on a person physically wiping every surface, which is slow, inconsistent, and prone to missed spots — especially on irregular surfaces. Electrostatic spraying is faster, reaches hidden surfaces, and eliminates the human error factor in coverage. It's applied after cleaning: cleaning removes soil, and disinfection kills pathogens on the now-clean surface.

Does electrostatic disinfection actually kill germs better?

The chemistry is the same EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectants used in traditional methods — what improves is the coverage. Independent surface testing shows electrostatic application achieves significantly more uniform chemical distribution than manual wiping. For a facility manager, the practical translation is: fewer missed high-touch surfaces, faster room turnaround, and documentation-friendly consistency.

Which facilities benefit most?

  • Medical and dental offices — exam rooms, waiting areas, and shared equipment
  • Gyms and fitness centers — equipment with high hand contact between users
  • Schools and daycare facilities — desks, shared tables, and restrooms
  • Churches and places of worship — pews, doors, and fellowship halls between services
  • Offices during flu season or after an illness outbreak — full-space reassurance in hours, not days

How long does it take, and is it safe?

A typical 3,000–5,000 sq ft office can be treated in under an hour. Areas need to remain unoccupied during application and for the disinfectant's stated dwell/contact time (usually 5–10 minutes). We use EPA List N products appropriate for the surface types in your facility, applied by trained technicians.

Should you add it to your cleaning program?

If your facility is medical, educational, fitness, or high-occupancy, regularly scheduled electrostatic treatment is a low-cost upgrade to your standard program. For general offices, on-demand treatment after an outbreak or ahead of flu season is often the right fit. TCP Facility Services offers electrostatic disinfection as both a scheduled service and a one-time treatment across Houston — request a quote to add it to your program.
